How to get here

By bus

There is a bus drop off and pick up point within the grounds of the museum itself. The 121 service runs between Haddington and North Berwick via the National Museum of Flight on Monday to Sunday from 1 April to 30 September.

 

A regular bus service runs from Edinburgh to North Berwick and an express bus service runs from Edinburgh to Haddington.

By bike

Free bicycle parking: There is a secure cycle rack available to park your bike.

 

From Edinburgh: Travelling east out of Edinburgh, take Cycle Route 76 for approx 23 miles to Haddington. Continue on Route 76 from Haddington, turn left towards A199, next turn right onto A199. After approximately 2.5 miles, turn left onto B1347 and follow the signs for the National Museum of Flight.

 

From the south: Pick up Cycle Route 76, following the A199 from East Linton. After approximately 6 miles, turn right onto B1347 and follow the signs for the National Museum of Flight.

 

10% bicycle discount: The National Museum of Flight is a member of the Green Tourism Business Scheme and supports sustainable tourism. On presentation of your cycle helmet at the ticket desk, receive 10% discount on one adult, concession or child admission. For validity on Family tickets, all family members must have travelled by bicycle. Not to be used in conjunction with any other offer. Not valid during special events.

By car

Parking at the museum is free, although there may be a charge during special events.

 

  • From Edinburgh: follow the A1 south exit at Abbotsview Junction. Take third exit from roundabout onto A199 for East Linton. After approximately 2.5 miles, turn left onto B1347 and follow the signs for the National Museum of Flight.
  • From the south: follow the A1 north to Thistlycross Roundabout. Take second exit to East Linton. At Beltonford Roundabout take second exit onto A199 for East Linton. After approximately 6 miles, turn right onto B1347 and follow the signs for the National Museum of Flight.

    Toilets are available throughout the site.

    Baby changing facilities are available in the Concorde hangar.

    The site is wheelchair accessible and wheelchairs can be borrowed free of charge.

    The Aviator Café is open daily from 10:00–17:00.

  • Cloakroom

    Buggies and pushchairs can be left at the ticket desk, and there are lockers available in the shop.

  • Picnic area

    There is a picnic area in the airfield.

  • Dogs

    Dogs are permitted in outdoor areas but must be kept on a lead.

  • Assistance dogs

    Assistance dogs are welcome in museum buildings and outdoors.

  • Parking

    Parking at the museum is free, although there may be a charge during special events.

  • Airfield Explorer

    The Airfield Explorer provides accessible transport between the hangars.

  • Information

    Our information desk can be found in the museum shop.

    The museum shop sells a range of aviation-themed gifts and books.

Information for your visit

Eating and drinking

The Aviator Café offers home baking, hot and cold dishes and freshly brewed teas and coffees. There is also a children’s menu. Open daily from 10:00–16:30 during the summer and weekends 10:00–16:00 over the winter. 

 

National Museums Scotland Members receive a 20% discount in the café.

 

You are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy in our outdoor picnic area, but no barbecues or gas stoves.

Visiting with children

Families and children of all ages are welcome at the National Museum of Flight. We provide a number of interactive attractions and activities especially for children and an exciting events calendar for all ages.

 

  • Trained first aiders are always on duty and a policy is in place if children become separated from their party. 
  • Buggies and pushchairs can be left with our Visitor Experience Assistants at the ticket desk, and there are lockers available in the shop.
  • Baby changing facilities are available in the Concorde hangar.
  • The Aviator Café offers a children's menu, high chairs and a facility for warming baby bottles.
  • There is an outdoor picnic area, popular with families of all ages.

School and group visits

If you’re planning to visit the National Museum of Flight as part of a group, please let us know you’re coming! Whether you're a school group, a society or special interest group, we will be delighted to work with you to plan your visit.

 

School visits
Teacher-led visits to the National Museum of Flight are free of charge. This includes entry to all our hangars and access to Concorde. A range of workshops, interpretation sessions and other activities are also available. Find out more and request a school visit.

 

Group visits
National Museum of Flight is a great day out for any type of group. We offer a discounted rate of £10.50 per person (£8.50 concessions) to groups of 10 or more adults. There is ample coach parking on-site and coach drivers can enjoy a free visit to the National Museum of Flight and also a complimentary lunch in our Aviator Café.

Birthday parties

Children can enjoy a high-flying birthday celebration at the National Museum of Flight, led by a party host from the museum. Our range of activities includes boarding Concorde, investigating Fantastic Flight, creative make and take, dressing up in uniform, air raid siren, completing the assault course, seeing military and passenger aircraft at close quarters and taking a ride on the Airfield Explorer.

 

After all the exertion, party goers sit down to a birthday spread in the Aviator Café. Activities and food can be tailored to suit the ages and needs of your group, although please note some activities are weather dependent.

 

Parties are available for a minimum of 10 children. You can choose between our Jet Powered Package at £12.00 per child or Supersonic Package at £14.00 per child. Call now on 0131 247 4238 for more information and to book your party.

Museum shop

Our shop next to the Concorde hangar stocks a wide range of flight-themed products for all ages – from toys and model aircraft to aviation-related books. You can also shop online.

 

National Museums Scotland Members receive a 10% discount and all major credit cards are accepted. 

Photography policy

Everyone is welcome to take photographs, including flash photography, in the hangars and galleries and around the outdoor site. Please note, photography restrictions may be in place around special exhibitions or displays. 

 

No prior permission is needed for photography intended for personal use. However, anyone wishing to take use a tripod on site should contact the information desk to obtain a photopass.

 

All photographers wishing to take photographs for publication on other websites, for all printed matter or other commercial use, are asked to contact Maggie Wilson in our Picture Library prior to visiting (tel. 0131 247 4026 or email m.wilson@nms.ac.uk).

Security

We want all our visitors and staff to be safe at the National Museum of Flight. If you have any questions or concerns, please speak to a member of our Visitor Experience team. You can also help us keep the museum safe by reporting anything that looks out of place or suspicious to our Visitor Experience Assistants.

Visiting with dogs

Assistance dogs are welcome in museum buildings and on the outdoor site.

 

Non-assistance dogs are welcome and allowed outdoors on the site as long as they are kept on a lead at all times. Please note, dogs are not allowed inside the hangar spaces.

Accessibility

Getting around the museum

We want everyone who comes to our museums to enjoy their time with us and make the most of their visit.

 

  • The Airfield Explorer provides accessible transport between the hangars.
  • The hangars have ramped access, however, due to the historic nature of our collection some of the aircraft, including Concorde, are not accessible to everyone.
  • The site is wheelchair accessible and wheelchairs can be borrowed free of charge. 
  • Adapted toilets are available.
  • Guide dogs, hearing dogs and other recognised assistance dogs are welcome in museum buildings and on the outdoor site.

Accessible parking

There is ample car parking at no charge, with spaces for disabled visitors next to the main hangar. There may be a change of disabled parking location and a parking fee at certain special events held at the National Museum of Flight.

Free entry for carers

Disabled visitors pay a concession for admission, with a carer accompanying for free.

BSL users

Deaf BSL (British Sign Language) users can make contact using the free ContactSCOTLAND-BSL service.
